How Fuel Types Affect Modern SUV Engines

How Fuel Types Affect Modern SUV Engines
06 May 2026

For drivers of premium SUVs, the choice at the filling station is more than a matter of cost. It’s a decision that directly influences the longevity and responsiveness of the vehicle's powertrain. Many vehicle owners wonder if the liquid they pump into their tanks really makes a difference in how their vehicle handles the daily commute through Dubai. Understanding the relationship between chemical energy and mechanical output is the first step toward optimizing your driving experience.

What Fuel Grades are Available in the UAE?

Standardized fuel grades are supplied across the country by providers such as ENOC and ADNOC, in line with the UAE’s regulated fuel pricing and distribution system.

The primary fuel options include:

  • E-Plus 91: An entry-level fuel suitable for older or low-compression engines.
  • Special 95 Octane: The most commonly used fuel grade for standard passenger vehicles and mid-range SUVs, sedans, and trucks in the UAE.
  • Super 98 Octane: A premium-grade fuel designed for high-performance engines that operate under higher pressure and temperature conditions.
  • Diesel: In addition to petrol options, diesel fuel is also widely available across UAE fuel stations and is commonly used in commercial vehicles, SUVs, and heavy-duty transport applications.

Does Fuel Choice Affect Performance?

There is a common misconception that higher octane fuel automatically increases power in all vehicles. In reality, an SUV’s engine efficiency is optimized when the fuel grade matches the engine’s design and tuning requirements.

Modern SUVs often use turbocharging and direct injection systems to maximize power from smaller engines. These systems rely on precise ignition timing, which is calibrated by the engine control unit (ECU). If a high-compression engine is used with a lower octane fuel than recommended, it may cause premature combustion (knocking) due to heat and pressure.

When the correct petrol grades are used, the engine can operate at its intended timing and efficiency levels. This results in smoother performance and better fuel economy.

Can Incorrect Fuel Cause Long-Term Issues?

Fuel quality across stations is generally consistent, but using a lower grade than recommended for your SUV can lead to gradual engine degradation. Modern engines are equipped with "knock sensors" that detect irregular combustion. If these sensors find a problem, the computer adjusts the ignition timing to protect the hardware. While this prevents immediate catastrophic failure, it leads to a noticeable drop in power and increased fuel consumption.

Over time, using sub-optimal fuel can contribute to:

  • Carbon buildup: Lower-quality or incorrect octane fuel can contribute to incomplete combustion, which may leave deposits on intake valves and fuel injectors, especially in direct injection engines.
  • Reduced component lifespan: Persistent engine knocking (even if mild and corrected by the ECU) can increase stress on internal components like pistons and connecting rods over long periods.
  • Catalytic converter strain: In certain conditions, inefficient combustion may allow small amounts of unburnt fuel to enter the exhaust system. This can increase temperatures within the catalytic converter and, over time, contribute to thermal stress or premature wear.

Maintaining the health of the fuel system is particularly important in the Middle East, where heat already places significant stress on the cooling and lubrication systems of the vehicle.

What Should SUV Drivers Prioritize?

Drivers should focus on the specific mechanical requirements of their vehicle rather than assuming that the most expensive fuel is always the best. For example, the Jetour X70 Plus and the SOUEAST S07 are engineered with advanced turbocharged engines. These engines can benefit from higher octane fuels, as they provide greater resistance to knocking under high pressure and temperature conditions. This helps the engine maintain optimal ignition timing and stable combustion, particularly under load.

When selecting a vehicle, consider the following priorities:

  • Manufacturer Specifications: Always check the fuel filler cap or the manual for the minimum required octane.
  • Driving Conditions: If you frequently drive at high speeds or carry heavy loads, a higher grade of fuel provides an extra margin of safety against engine knock.
  • Fuel Freshness: High-traffic stations in urban areas often have the freshest fuel, which minimizes the risk of moisture contamination.

When you lease a brand-new Jetour or SOUEAST model from ART Elite Car Rental, you gain access to a range of advanced vehicles designed for performance and efficiency. Alternatively, you can explore eco-friendly PHEV options such as the Jetour T2 i-DM and SOUEAST S08 DM, offering a balance between power and fuel economy.

Leasing with us also means peace of mind as maintenance, registration, and essential services are all handled at no additional cost. So whenever your vehicle needs attention, a dedicated team is always ready to support you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mixing different octane fuels in a vehicle will not usually cause immediate harm to the engine, and is sometimes used as a short-term solution when the recommended fuel is not available.

However, it’s not advisable as a regular practice. Modern engines are calibrated to perform best with a specific fuel grade, and deviating from the manufacturer’s recommendation can affect combustion efficiency and overall performance over time, even if the difference is not instantly noticeable.

The main difference between Super 98 and Special 95 fuel in the UAE is their octane rating. Special 95 has an octane rating of 95, while Super 98 has an octane rating of 98.

Higher-octane fuels like Super 98 are more resistant to knocking, especially under high engine compression, heat, and long highway driving conditions common in the UAE. This makes them suitable for turbocharged, high-compression, or performance engines.

Special 95 is suitable for most standard vehicles and everyday driving, as long as it matches the manufacturer’s recommendation. In both cases, the fuel quality provided by major UAE suppliers is consistent and designed for reliable engine performance.

Using a higher octane fuel than what your vehicle manufacturer recommends doesn’t automatically improve fuel economy. In most cases, any difference in performance or efficiency is minimal, while the added cost of higher-grade fuel is unlikely to bring meaningful benefits.

In fact, in some cases, consistently using a higher grade than required may even contribute to carbon deposits building up in the engine over time.

For best results, fuel efficiency is achieved by following the fuel grade specified in your owner’s manual, as engines are designed and tuned to perform optimally at that recommended octane level.

If the wrong fuel has been used in your car, it often becomes noticeable shortly after leaving the petrol station through changes in how the vehicle drives.

Common warning signs include sudden jerking or “jumping” while accelerating, where the car may feel like it’s losing power periodically. In some cases, you may also notice unusual smoke coming from the exhaust, which can indicate abnormal combustion. Another clear sign is engine misfiring, where the engine may splutter, make knocking sounds, or struggle to run smoothly.

If any of these symptoms appear after refuelling, it’s important to stop the vehicle safely, turn off the engine, and seek professional assistance as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
